Alex is a sixteen year old misfit teen at Canada's most elite private school growing up in the mid 1990's. Confused and struggling with his sexuality, he wards off advances from a pedophile teacher and begins an affair with one of his fellow students. Sadly this relationship quickly unravels with the revelation of their affair to both classmates and teachers alike and following the death of Alex's mother soon after the collapse of his parent's marriage and his father's affair. While Alex struggles with his mother's death and his father's betrayal, he begins a new life across the country in Victoria British Columbia at a much different co-ed private school with only his presumably gay godfather and his grandmother to help him. Living alone at seventeen with access to money and alcohol, Alex continues to come to terms with his new life and quickly falls for the most popular boy at his new school, Pincrest. Despite what seems like Ben's perfection, Alex quickly finds out that there is much more going on in this sleepy town and at this quiet school. During the course of his senior year he must come to terms with love, loss, and his sexuality, while fending off threats from both the girls and the boys at Pincrest who are also vying for Ben's affections.

One of the other reviewers complained about too much detail; I usually don't find that a problem unless the author is repeating themselves, which is not the case here. It's simply a complicated story with a lot of characters.

Alex's new private high school in Victoria, about 60 miles south of Vancouver, is co-ed vs. the all-boys school he went to in Toronto (where he had to leave due to a tryst with another male student). There are a lot of boy-girl relationships and agendas going on between the students at the new school. At times one feels a scorecard is in order to keep everything straight.

The main theme of the book is Alex's preoccupation/lust over another boy named Ben. Shortly after starting the school year, Alex is asked to tutor Ben in history and geography. They decide to do this at Alex's townhouse where he lives alone since his mother recently died and his father is away almost all the time for business in Europe. Alex pursues Ben despite Ben having a girlfriend. Alex later self-describes himself as 80% gay and 20% straight, and Ben as 20% gay and 80% straight.

My only complaint is the use of a couple of stereotypes; first there being no parents, since one just died and the other is always gone, so Alex has the townhouse to himself and can have friends over anytime, throw parties at will etc. (Legally, can he even live by himself at 17?) Secondly, he is crazy rich, having inherited all of his mother's money. At one point in the story, his father gives him a check for a million dollars.

Pinecrest Boys A Coming Out Story edition by Alex Fossberg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this book, however I do believe the author indulges in too much detail. good book overall I think. it was
story good enough for me to finish the book.
This is a story about a privileged, selfish boy trying to come to terms with being gay and always trying to get what he wants. Overall I wasn't very impressed with this book. The author needed a good editor before publishing his work.
This is absolutely the most boring m/m coming out story I've ever read. I struggled through the first 20% of the book really trying to get interested but just gave up. There was potential for interesting characters such as with the gay teachers at Alex's first school but the author never flushed out these characters. Same with Alex's first love interest. Other than the initial pool scene, there was very little detail about this relationship. The author does seem to relish going on and on about the wonderful scenery and the roads and hills and buildings but ignores character development. Again, this review is based on the first 20% of the book. Maybe it got better but I have better things to do with my time.
I ENJOYED IT, IT WAS GOOD.
